Children go to Pre School for one year before attending primary school (1 to 3 year) and upper primary (4 to 6 year). Children learn basic skills of literacy and numeracy in primary classes.
The secondary education follows two levels- lower secondary, and upper secondary. The lower secondary level covers 3 years of education at the end of which students appear for the Lower Secondary Assessment or Penilaian Menengah Bawah (PMB) examination.
The level 2 lower secondary education is an alternative program for students who are more inclined towards vocational courses.
Education at the upper secondary level is general in nature with some provision for specialization in science, arts and technical fields. At the end of the second year, high academic achievers appear for the Brunei-Cambridge GCE Ordinary level (GCE ‘O’ Level) examination. The Sultanate of Brunei also has number of Science schools, Sports School, Privately-funded Schools, and Vocational Schools.
